2024 Competition Classes

The BBI Drinks Competition consists of two main events; one for Ales, Lagers, Ciders & Alcoholic Drinks and one for Waters, Soft Drinks & Juices. These are broken down via product type and further categorised by ABV or variation.

The below categories are descriptive for the 2024 competition only.

Ales, Lagers, Ciders & Alcoholic Drinks | Waters, Soft Drinks & Juices

 

Ales, Lagers, Ciders & Alcoholic Drinks

Class A1 - Ales, abv 1.5% - 3.9% Any light, amber, red, real ale, bitter, or other variation (such as Weisse, Belgian, Wheat, etc.) with an abv between 1.5 and 3.9%. Class A2 - Ales, abv 4.0% - 4.4% Any light, amber, red, real ale, bitter, or other variation (such as Weisse, Belgian, Wheat, etc.) with an abv between 4.0 and 4.4%. Class A3 - Ales, abv 4.5% - 4.9% Any light, amber, red, real ale, bitter, or other variation (such as Weisse, Belgian, Wheat, etc.) with an abv between 4.5 and 4.9%. Class A4 - Ales, abv 5.0% - 5.9% Any light, amber, red, real ale, bitter, or other variation (such as Weisse, Belgian, Wheat, etc.) with an abv between 5.0 and 5.9%. Class A5 - Ales, abv 6.0% - 7.4% Any light, amber, red, real ale, bitter, barleywine or other variation (such as Weisse, Belgian, Wheat, etc.) with an abv between 6.0 and 7.4%. Class A6 - Ales, abv 7.5% and above Any light, amber, red, real ale, bitter, barleywine or other variation (such as Weisse, Belgian, Wheat, etc.) with an abv of 7.5% or higher. Class A7 - IPA (India Pale Ale), abv 4.0% - 5.4% Any IPA with an abv between 4.0 and 5.4%. Class A8 - IPA (India Pale Ale), abv 5.5% - 7.4% Any stonger IPA with an abv between 5.5 and 7.4%. Class A9 - Stout, Porter or Dark Ale, abv 4.0% - 5.4% Any stout, porter or dark/brown ale with an abv between 4.0 and 5.4%. Class A10 - Stout, Porter or Dark Ale, abv 5.5% - 7.4% Any stout, porter or dark/brown ale with an abv between 5.5 and 7.4%. Class A11 - Lagers, abv 4.0% - 5.5% Any light, amber, dark, bock, pilsner or speciality (spiced, smoked, etc.) lager with an abv between 4.0 and 5.5%. Class A12 - Ciders, abv 4.0% - 5.4% Any traditional apple-based cider with an abv between 4.0 and 5.4%. Class A13 - Ciders, abv 5.5% - 6.9% Any traditional apple-based cider with an abv between 5.5 and 6.9% Class A14 - Ciders, abv 7.0% and above Any traditional apple-based cider with an abv of 7.0% or higher. Class A15 - Flavoured Ciders/Perry Any cider or perry style drink that is either mixed apple and other fruit/spices or made from any other base (pear, etc.). Can be any abv. Class A16 - Low Strength Ales, abv 0.5% or below Any ale that has been brewed to a zero or low alcohol level - not exceeding 0.5% abv Class A17 - Low Strength Ciders, abv 0.5% or below Any cider (apple, pear or flavoured) that has been brewed to a zero or low alcohol level - not exceeding 0.5% abv Class AP - Packaging A decorated bottle, can, carton or other container to be judged on its shape, style, type of closure, label/sleeve type and design.

 

Waters, Soft Drinks & Juices

Class W1 - Spring Water, Still Any water sourced from a natural spring or borehole. Class W2 - Spring Water, Sparkling Any water sourced from a natural spring or borehole with a degree of carbonation. Class W3 - Flavoured Waters, Fruit Any water (natural, mineral, spring, filtered) which has been infused with any type of fruit flavouring or spice. Class W4 - Flavoured Waters, Botanical/Herbal Any water (natural, mineral, spring, filtered) which has been infused with any type of botanical, herbal or spiced flavouring. Class W5 - Flavoured Soft Drinks/Lemonade Any beverage (soda, pop, cola, etc.) with any type flavouring or sweetening, or any style of Lemonade. Class W6 - Premium/Adult Soft Drinks Any beverage or juice, normally with a more complex flavour/mix of flavours, that is targeted towards adults or as an alternative to alcohol. Class W7 - Alcohol-Free Cocktails/Mocktails Any zero-alcohol beverage made to emulate a traditional cocktail or made with zero-alcohol spirit. Class W8 - Fruit Juices Any fruit juice or juice mix made from fresh or concentrated ingredients. Class WP - Packaging A decorated bottle, can, carton or other container to be judged on its shape, style, type of closure, label/sleeve type and design.
